Background

Anwar's father, Tan Sri Haji Anwar bin Abdul Malik, was credited as the man who gave the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) its name – initially United Malays Organization. This was at a meeting in Batu Pahat when seven UMNO founders from Johor Baru met Datuk Onn Jaafar to call for a unification of the disparate Malay nationalist groups at the time. He later became Onn’s private secretary when Onn became Johor’s Mentri Besar. Anwar's mother was Hajjah Saodah bte Abdullah, a housewife.

Family

Anwar has two elder sisters. Zainah Anwar is a prominent Malaysian non-governmental organisation leader and activist. She was the head of Sisters in Islam for more than twenty years before deciding to step down to give way to young blood to continue the fight for Muslim women's rights. Datuk Zarinah Anwar, the chairman of the Malaysian Securities Commission Malaysia. Their father died in 1998 two weeks before his 100th birthday, and their mother, Hajjah Saodah bte Abdullah, died the following year. Anwar married a Johorian woman from Pontian named Misriati bte Robani in 1993. They have three children: two sons, Mohamad Syakir Idraqie bin Ahmad Zakii (born 1994) and Mohamad Syahir bin Ahmad Zakii (1996), and a daughter, Serina Ahmad Zakii (2007).
